The ultimate goal is to improve quality of life for both patient and family.  Palliative care can be introduced at any point throughout a child’s life; it is completely individual. Some children may require palliative care from birth, others only as their condition deteriorates. Families may also vary as to whether they wish to pursue treatments aimed to cure or significantly prolong life.in practice to the palliative care should be offered from the diagnosis of life limiting condition that has the curative treatment for a life threating condition.  Every year over 100,000 babies are in neonatal units as they have either been born prematurely or full term but sick. This means that around 1 in 7 babies born are admitted on to neonatal units, in 2016, 1,337 babies who were born after 24 weeks gestation died in their first 28 days of life.
